Stress, Opioids, Nicotine Addiction, & Relapse (SONAR)

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this research is to understand how smokers’ responses to naltrexone and stress relate to smoking, smoking cessation, and relapse.

How often are the clinic visits?

If you are a smoker, we expect that you will be in this research study for a total of up to around 18-20 hours over the course of about 4 months or less, though it is possible that the researcher will ask you to schedule follow-up visits over the course of approximately 1 year. This research includes a brief daily diary (~1 minute daily) in addition to up to 11 remote videoconference meetings and accompanying online questionnaires: 2 remote medical screening meetings/questionnaires (~3 hrs total); 2 remote pre-performance meetings (~1 hr each); 2 remote performance sessions (~4 hrs each); and 5 remote follow-up meetings (~1 hr each).

If you are a non-smoker, we expect that you will be in this research study for a total of up to around 13-25 hours over the course of about 1-2 months. This research includes a brief daily diary (~1 minute daily) in addition to up to 6 remote videoconference meetings and accompanying online questionnaires: 2 remote medical screening meetings/questionnaires (~3 hrs total); 2 remote pre-performance meetings (~1 hr each); and 2 remote performance sessions (~4 hrs each).

What will I be doing in the study?

In addition to the activities listed above:

  • smokers will be required to quit smoking 15 hours prior to each performance session
  • all participants will take naltrexone or placebo during each performance session
