Pilot Study - Assessing the Effects of Smoking Products on Vascular Function and Vascular Microparticles

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of various smoking products (traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes) on blood vessels.

How often are the clinic visits?

Participation will require a single visit that will last approximately three hours.

What will I be doing in the study?

You will be asked to come to the University of Minnesota's Delaware Clinical Research Unit and either smoke a cigarette, an e-cigarette or neither depending on which tobacco product (if any) you normally use.

After a short questionnaire on tobacco use and then a nicotine test, you will have two blood samples taken and two rounds of vascular tests (one before use and one after use).  The vascular tests are done via an ultrasound probe placed over the skin of your left arm before and after a blood pressure cuff is inflated on your forearm.

Will I be compensated?

If you agree to take part in this research study, we will pay you $100 for your time and effort.  Payment will be paid via a pre-paid debit card.
