Telehealth study assessing the removal of filter ventilation on smoking behavior and biomarkers

What is the purpose of the study?

This study will examine how the design of the cigarette filter affects smoking behavior, exposure to smoke chemicals and the potential health effects from these exposures. The health measures that we examine include exposure to tobacco chemicals, nicotine levels, and risk factors for lung or heart disease. The cigarette used in this study is a brand of cigarettes that you can buy at the store.

How often are the clinic visits?

You will first attend a remote virtual screening visit to learn more about the study and see if you are eligible. The research study lasts about 13 weeks. You will attend 11 virtual visits and then a follow-up visit 1 month after you stop the study cigarettes. The visits last between 1-2 hours. You will also attend weekly curbside visits or brief in clinic visits to receive study cigarettes and at some, drop off biological samples.

What will I be doing in the study?

You will be asked to complete visits by using virtual technology that includes apps like Zoom or WebEx. Questionnaires will be completed at your home using your phone, tablet or computer. Vitals and carbon monoxide readings will be completed during virtual visits on your own by monitors provided by the study. Saliva, urine, optional cheek cell, dried blood spots and hair samples will be collected from you and returned during the curbside visit. You will keep daily record of your tobacco use. Lastly, you will be provided with study cigarettes to smoke for eight weeks.

Will I be compensated?

If you agree to take part in this research study, you could receive up to $855 for your time and effort. You will receive $40 for attending the telehealth screening visit. There are 5 shorter telehealth visits where you will receive $30, and 4 longer visits where you will receive $40. There is also a follow up visit 4 weeks after completing the trial, where you will receive $30. You will receive up to $185 for sample collections.  You will receive $10 for travel reimbursement for each curbside visit. You will receive up to $90 for weeks that you completed all of the daily calls. If you have completed all other study procedures you will receive a $100 bonus.
