Biomarkers of Exposure and Effect in SREC Users

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to better understand how switching from smoking to the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) may change users’ exposures to various harmful chemicals. Your participation will also help us to understand how nicotine that is present in e-cigarettes is taken in and modified by your body.

How often are clinic visits?

You will be asked to attend a screening visit, which will occur remotely using a secured video-conferencing system and then 10 additional visits that will take place over approximately 11 weeks.

What will I be doing in the study?

Screening visit. First, we will determine if you are eligible for our study. At this visit, you will complete several forms regarding your history of tobacco use, health, and use of medications. If you are eligible and agree to participate, you will be invited back to the clinic for the baseline visits.

Baseline period. At the first baseline visit we will take breath and urine samples to test for smoking, and pregnancy. Your vitals will also be measured.  If you are pregnant or do not meet the smoking criteria, the visit will end and you will not be eligible for the study. Additionally, we will teach you how to complete a diary that will be filled out every day during the study.  If you are cleared for study participation, we will ask you to return to the clinic for the second baseline visit. At this visit we will ask you to collect your first morning void urine and bring it with you on the day of your clinic visit. We will collect a breath sample, which indicates how much you have smoked. We will measure your heart rate and blood pressure. If your smoking levels and blood pressure are within normal range, we will collect saliva and cells from inside your mouth. You will also be asked to complete additional forms asking about your health and your experiences with smoking cigarettes.  At the end of the Baseline 2 visit, we will give you study product that you will use for the next 6 weeks.

Study visits. During the study you will be required to come into the lab each week for 4 weeks and then every other week for a total of 6 weeks. You will be asked to complete computer assessments and other study procedures at each visit.  After 6 weeks in the study, there will be a follow-up visit 4 weeks later.

Will I be compensated?

Upon completion of the study and all of its requirements, you will receive up to $925.
